Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay was born on August 24 1972 at Long Beach California. DuVernay discovered her love for the arts from her grandmother Denise. Aunt Denise worked as a nurse who stayed overnight in order to give her the opportunity to study art and literature, or even theater. DuVernay loved the film West Side Story, which she showed her. DuVernay recognized that art is an effective tool for promoting activism. DuVernay's mother also had a social consciousness and taught DuVernay how to convey messages by means of the medium of art. Although DuVernay lived in Compton with her parents, she spent every summer in Lowndes County Alabama where her father's family grew up for generations. DuVernay's Father recalled witnessing the historic march of Civil Rights Movement on the Edmund Pettus Bridge. It was in Selma Alabama, a neighboring city. DuVernay visited Selma during the summer months and was motivated to make a documentary on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. In the year 1990, DuVernay was a graduate of Saint Joseph High School in Lakewood California. She attended University of California Los Angeles to earn degrees in English and African American Studies. As in school, DuVernay became interested in producing for broadcast journalism. Her first job was working as an intern at CBS News during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay was told to look at the trash of a jury member's home. She was disappointed by the journalism assignments she was assigned and chose to switch over to the public relations industry. DuVernay was hired right out of college as a junior publicist at an unassuming studio. From this position she started her own company for public relations called The DuVernay Agency in 1999.
